The King of Harping Harpers

Now, as some of you may know or if you've read my work, you know how much I just love social conservatives. Well, here in Canada, we sadly have a social conservative control freak named Stephen 'I want to be King Bush' Harper.

This week, our intrepid Harping Harper was doing just that, harping. This time his target was the NDP who to the surprise of many, including some Liberals, has experienced a resurgence of sorts and Mr. Harper was not about to tolerate that. That said, at least he's consistent given he's intolerant anyone not obedient and servile to him.

Now Harper went on one of his usual rants and as always, displayed a lack of tact, class or knowledge of the subject at hand......and what was the subject? well it was the cut to cultural funding. Now let me first preface by saying that I happen to believe that most actors, filmmakers and the like should, for the most part, fend for themselves. I say this only because although I believe the funding needed to be trimmed back, I don't feel Mr. Harper truly understands the function of the arts or, and this is important, the amount of spin-off business it creates. When discussing the cuts, Mr. Harper spouted some line about the average Canadian comes home from work, turns on the tv, only to see spoiled "elitist" artists at a gala event. Ironic "given that his wife Laureen is the honorary chair of the National Arts Centre's gala next month in Ottawa". Also, I couldn't help but note use of the word "elitist" which is the same tired old jibe at anyone considered too intelligent for conservatives, one only look at how many time Bill O'reilly at fixed news uses it to truly understand how childish and petulant the usage is.

He then continued his specious nonsense in Saskatchewan where he stated his position in regards to his justice stance were a top priority for "ordinary" Canadian and "not people who work in ivory towers, but people who actually work on the street and deal with crime on a day-to-day basis." I can only assume the degrees Mr. Harper has and his current address are not, shall we say, Ivory so to speak.

Sadly, these are but two examples of how Mr. Harper has decided to run his government, not with democracy but demagoguery. Add to that his penchant for cherry picking issues and of course his desire to 'Bush' style his government.

Mr. Harper should be careful how far he intends to push this 'Americanization' of Canadian politics lest he discover that, although Canadians are friends with their neighbours to the south, most don't want to be Americans.

GATTACA here we come

Now some of you may remember a film called GATTACA, starring Ethan Hawke and Uman Thurman. The story was a cautionary tale of how genetics went from being used to help people and potential flaws to a society of genetically enhanced people. At the time this film hit the screens most people merely saw it as good sci-fi with a hint truth, well the time has come (click title for link).

The article in question touts the use of gene testing to find a predisposition the breast cancer among women and, to be sure, it is a great achievement and will surely ease the suffering of many, even preventing future problems......however......how long before it's not just potential diseases people will want to check. How long before eye colour, height, and other traits are tested for and, this is where it gets a little scary, what do you do if you know your child will be born with traits you yourself do not desire.

It is in this vein that I would offer caution on how to proceed. At what point do we, as a species, go too far in manipulating our genetic make up. What will happen when genetics can detect, say, homosexuality? Then what? Do you send your child to gene therapy to correct the 'anomaly'? And what if this is discovered during pregnancy, do you terminate the child? Who decides? This is a question not only for philosophers and theologians but for all us as human beings.

As I said, this test for breast cancer via gene testing is noble and will no doubt be of great help to women, but at what point do we accept that life has its own plan and that sometimes, just sometimes, we should tread most carefully.

Truer words were never spoken. This week is Arkansas, the Tony Alamo Christian Church was raided by several federal agents on complaints of child pornography and molestation.....as the French say......Quelle Surprise!

What makes this event all the more vile, is that the leader of this cult is actually quoted a believing that consent by a girl for sex is puberty. One shudders at what consent from boys entails. Add to this mix that this fine upstanding Christian organization is anti-choice, anti-gay, pro-abstinence only, and fervently rigid in scriptural interpretation, one has to wonder how anyone could possibly find this kind of life attractive, and yet, there they are, his loyal albeit 'simple' flock.

As if this were not enough to curdle your blood, Mr. Alamo (pictured), the aforementioned leader of the cult is also an ex-con, although given what he's been up to, I suspect he's still coning a few people. (on a side note, is it just me or does Mr. Alamo look like a pimp or lounge lizard?)This is one of those stories that gives you the creeps but what I find most tragic is that this attitude of moral certainty in all things biblical all too often lead to this kind of vile and disturbing activity.

Chris Reid, Ignorant Asshole Extraordinaire

Chris Reid, remember that name, I know I will. Here we have the ultimate in Conservative idiocy, so idiotic there's no pretense in how this tiny effete man is not only ignorant of reality but is glowing example of what the Conservative nee Reform party has become.

This small man has had to step down from running for the Conservatives in a Toronto riding, not because of time constraints, which he dishonestly claimed......oh no......it's because of some of his comments on his blog, which to be fair, were at least honest in so much as what Conservatives in Canada are thinking these days. One could almost feel sorry for this Log Cabin Republican wannabe........almost, but then, when you consider that this minute minded child of a man is both gay AND conservative, well, you know there's some self hatin' goin' on. Bad enough that he would support a government that has made it clear it despises anyone not heterosexual, christian and white, and let's not mince words; that is exactly what the Conservatives are all about.

To be sure, Chrissy will no doubt have to live down this embarrassing episode and God knows I suspect his gay dance card will remain somewhat empty, but, like so much fecal material, this too shall pass.

The truly sad part of this rather pathetic and self-loathing event is that once again Canadians have been given a piece of the Conservative puzzle. Calling Canadians effeminate because of socialist ideas, which by the by, Canada is not running rampant with, and to advocate more guns on the streets vis-a-vis concealed weapons permits!! well, you imagine how that's going over in Toronto; a city suffering from shootings almost every second or third day.

As with all thing far right conservative, Chrissy has proven to be just as militant, rigid and unyielding as those on the far left. I can't speak for other Canadians and can only speak for myself when I say...ENOUGH!

I am tired of Jack Layton and the NDP bitching about how the rich should pay and we should man the battlements. I am loathe to even look at Stephane Dion and his milquetoast Liberals......but the Conservatives and their social ideology of rigid conformity is just too much, and when a sissy named Chrissy spews anti-Canadian bile, I have no choice but to question his credibility, his integrity, his loyalty and most of all, his intelligence. Disagree if you will Chrissy but don't dare think that you can blatantly slam the Canadian populace with what is clearly your puerile attempt at American style rhetoric.

Greta is Re-GRETA-ble

Oh poor Greta Van Susteren of Fixed News, however will she sleep these days. Greta as some of you may know is akin to a more thoughtful Ann Coulter (I know, the mind boggles). She, like Ann, is....bluntly put, a tele-bimbo with absolutely no understanding of the real world, in fact, it's a safe bet that like Ann, we should start to question her credentials and whether or not, like Ann, she spread her legs for her degree. I say this without any guilt whatsoever because if dear Greta the Great (at least in her own mind) truly believes an opinion piece should be scrutinized as a news piece should be, she might want to consider leaving fixed news for a more appropriate organization worthy of her talents...say...the national enquirer (with apologies to the enquirer).

The truth of the matter is, Greta the Great is not only confused as to what a news piece and an opinion piece is, but she herself casts aspersions and commits the same 'dastardly' deed to which she is so apoplectic about. I of course am speaking of the wonderfully sarcastic "opinion" piece offered by Heather Mallick of the CBC. The "opinion" piece offered a blunt, not too subtle slap upside the collective heads not only of Sarah Palin, but also the Republican party and to a greater extent, the great unwashed white trash of America.....and let's be honest, there's of lot of them out there. Contributing to this manufactured puffery of petulant prose and protestations is one David Wareen of the Ottawa Citizen, a more pompous ass and ignoramus, fixed news could no better find. Now Mr. Warren and Greta the Great are more than free to bitch and moan the imaginary slander that Ms. Mallick has supposedly committed, but when Greta the Great calls Ms. Mallick a pig, which she did within a minute or so into the 'interview' with Mr. Warren, she immediately negated any legitimacy she may have had.....and believe me, that's stretching credulity at best. Fixed News, which is renowned for the obfuscation factor when it comes to news let alone opinion, has once again lowered the bar in what passes for news or intelligent discourse in the US.....again, not a stretch. I don't know what happened to the US, be it 9/11, the lie that is Iraq or just the not so hidden desire for global domination, the US is a pale reflection of what it once was and stood for. Sadly, Greta the Great and her ilk are now the standard bearers for what America stands for......White Trash Values peppered with a Christian Right Wing Evangelical superstition and an almost willful disregard or denial of the one simple fact: you aren't the only ones on the planet.

In the end, this latest faux outrage is just so much bullshit passing for discourse.

As for Heather Mallicks piece about Sarah Palin, it was opinion, not a news story and frankly, if it's one thing fixed news is good at, it's opinion masquerading as news.

The WHAT Project???

Ok......so let me get this straight. The 'Truth' Project is a way to bring like minded evangelicals together to understand the world from a biblical perspective. Sounds harmless enough....NOT.

Look, let's get one thing out of the way right off the top. If 'Christians' wish to have a biblical worldview, I say let them.....but.....and you knew there would be one, a caveat needs to be offered up as to what this is really all about. The 'Christian' right has once again tripped up in their attempt for global hegemony and this 'project' is just another piece of the puzzle. The idea of denying facts for the sake of biblical 'truth' is not only backwards, it's quite frankly, dishonest.

The idea that Darwinism is anti-God continues to astound me. How can science be anti-anything. Science, like facts, is not inherently good or bad, it simply is. Science is based on considered experimentation and observation. Science is by definition objective not subjective, yet here we are being offered "truth" based solely on a book that at best is a collection of opinion interlaced with some historical events. Further, this "truth" is offered up as proof of God's design again solely based on the bible. I can never understand how otherwise intelligent people who use many of the creations of science including the Internet, CD's, cars, planes, etc., can blindly deny science when it suits their 'beliefs'. Belief is the key here because even if one believes the world is flat, science factually proves it is round. Belief that life just popped out of thin air, forgive me, out of dust, flies in the face of scientific facts involving, if not evolution, then at least the longevity of the earth and different ages of history. Belief in a divine being is belief, it is not Fact. This is important to note because although belief in a divine being may serve to help some cope or understand their existence, it cannot be said to be either 'truth' or fact, it can only be considered belief.......and belief is not science nor is it fact, is merely subjective thought.

I would ask that anyone using the word 'truth' to describe what is essentially subjective thought, to use more care and little more honesty.

To quote Bradley Whitford on Bill Mahers Real-Time "if you believe you are talking to God, you have faith, if you KNOW you're talking or hearing God, you're a schizophrenic"

Ahh Fixed News (Fox for you conservatives), you so have to love their excitable excretion of fecal matter that passes for news. Now, for those who may not know of what I speak, click on the title of the blog to watch the video news footage of Fixed News flipping out over a column written by CBC contributor Heather Mallick.

Now I can understand how Fixed News might be a bit upset, given the drooling and groveling that they bestowed upon one Sarah Palin, but please, can we get some perspective on this. Sarah Palin is what she is and when she blathers out about how she believes elitists are bad for the country, she cannot then cower nor Fixed News cower when someone throws it back in her face. Ms. Mallicks' column is both tongue in cheek and definitely sarcastic but then again, did Fixed News not see Sarah Palins' speech at the convention. As I said, you best be prepared to get what you give......and Palin gave quite a bit.

Now turnabout is fair play and Ms. Mallick is merely practising said turnabout, but it is more than rich for Fixed News to bemoan such a columns when they are not only known for their distortions of the truth but have, on more than one occasion, outright lied to serve their own ends.

All I can say is boo hoo to you Fixed News. You lowered the bar on what passes for news and now complain when someone not only betters you at sarcasm but also shows a more intelligent and intellectual way of doing it. Fixed News best remember this, it was column, not a news story, unlike the opinion pieces that pass as news stories on your broadcasts.

On another note, please spare me the "CBC is a Far Left publicly funded agency". If you believe that then you have so moved to the right, you've come full circle......dizzy yet?

Shocking as it is, I am today thanking Michael Coren for his column in today's' Saturday Sun (click title for link)

Today Mr. Coren wrote about the Harper government and how well it's done with a minority, but further points as to what more he would or could do with a majority. Of course, as with all things Coren, our dear Michael can't help but gush over Mr. Harper's successes. Appointing more "conservative" judges, who apparently are the only judges who are 'fair' and not 'activist'. (On a side note, I never understood how a judge, who's job is to interpret the constitution and the law thereof, would be activist, but there you are.) Removing the ability of poorer people to have access to legal challenges, apparently only the rich and well heeled are allowed access to the legal system.

I could go on but one gets the point. Michael is just tickled pink (not pinko Michael, so calm down) at the thought of a majority 'conservative' government. And as always, Michael can't help but mention feminists and of course, his favourite whipping boys, gays. Michael has a thing about gays, and the more he professes his 'respect' for gays all the while verbally beating them down so they don't get uppity, the more I wonder about where he really stands on the issue. That of course is for another blog.

I wanted to thank Michael for his column today, not because of what he said, but for what he is implying. A conservative majority under Harper, according to Michael, would be more in line with Washington and the Republicans of GW Bush, and people like Michael could finally shed the niceties of their faux facades and actually come out swinging. The virulent disgust and bile that Michael has for anyone who isn't Christian or Jewish, heterosexual or male (unless it's Maggie Thatcher or the like), is just waiting to burst forth in what I suspect would be a climax of such proportions that Michael would be spent for at least a year. This kind of masturbatory rant of all things conservative can only lend itself to the truth......and the truth is, Mr. Harper does have a hidden agenda, he is a control freak who's desire for complete dominance is almost fetishistic in nature, to the point of almost being pornographic.

Let us be clear.

Thanks to Michael and his column and future ones I'm sure, people will see what's really coming if they vote for a Harper majority. Even Mr. Harper has stayed away from the M word, knowing full well that Canadians, who by and large are more liberal as opposed to Liberal, don't like it when religion and US style politics are played out on the Canadian stage. I have no doubt as to what the end result would be for Canada should the 'Conservatives' win a majority, it would mean the dismantling of freedoms hard won for gays and lesbians, the introduction of religious litmus tests for judges, and most of all, a hegemonic leader who would control and micro manage a government to the point of Kremlin like secrecy.

Now Micheal at this point would call what I've written 'tripe' or 'overblown' but then Michael has never really had to fight for what he has, has he. He need not worry about whether he can be fired for being what he is. He will never understand the fear he himself generates in the hearts of gays and lesbians whom he 'respects'. He will never know the anguish of losing a loved one to a hate crime, for hate is what he foments, even as he blindly believes otherwise.

All in all, the column Michael wrote today is a gift, because at the end of the day, if Michael Coren is writing about a majority, it can only serve as a clarion call to others who love our country and the freedom it allows all its' citizens, not the chosen few, to stand up and fight to keep Canada for Canadians and not for Mr. Harper, his alliance lackeys or the US Republicans.

CERN or how I learned to love the Big Bang

Well, today was THE day. Today the world was supposed to end by:

A) a man made black hole
B) the creation of anti-matter
C) the big bang

As you can guess, none of the above happened.

Now for those who are not up on current events, I am of course talking about the CERN Hadron Collider experiment. For those who are of a more rational bent, this event was fascinating but hardly frightening. The same cannot be said of the more, shall we say, superstitious. Sadly, the religious right, specifically the evangelicals, have made this experiment out to be the undoing of mankind and unfortunately, they aren't the only ones.

As you may have heard, a young Indian girl committed suicide out of fear for the end of the world due to the CERN experiment. This anxiety and fear was not brought on by rational thought or critical thinking but by, you guessed it, religious fear. What must have been going through her mind must have been truly terrifying so as to come to the sad conclusion that death was the only way out.

Now to be sure, the religious among us have every right to believe what they will but truthfully, this tragic story serves to illustrate what can happen when irrational fear of science is allowed to so permeate a persons life that they become not only trapped in it but ultimately fall victim to its militant and dogmatic fanaticism. Many in the religious community have condemned the CERN experiment and have, as I stated, declared it to be the end of the world. Well, today they turned it on and guess what.......nothing. No end of the world, nothing.......nothing that is but the two white dots confirming the protons had travelled as expected. Of course there are more tests and experiments to be done but the fact that the protons had travelled and met without incident bodes well for those still frightened by CERN. The end is not nigh.

CERN is an important step forward in our understanding of the universe and like Galileo and Copernicus before us, we must not allow the Church or plain Superstition to dissuade us from rational, scientific endeavor. We are at the dawn not only of a new century but of a new millennium as well, and although there was a time we looked to the Church and to Superstitions of higher powers, we must move out of our infancy and into our adulthood as a species. We must finally break the bonds of ignorance once and for all and move forward. CERN will be a great success and who knows, it could be the beginning of a new renaissance of science and exploration and perhaps, just maybe, it could even bring about a greater understanding of the universe, and in a sense, God. For what is God if not the universe itself.

It has been said that mankind is the universe manifest trying to understand itself.

I don't know about you, but I think I like the idea of being part of the universe and not just a spectator to its limitless possibilities.

Superstition will always be with us, be it sailing off the edge of the earth or supposedly creating black holes that devour us, be as I said, the time has come for us, humankind, to grow up and stand tall. As for those who would have us remain small both in mind and spirit, I only need point to that misguided Indian girl and ask, is this what your fears have wrought.

These are my thoughts.........do with them as you will.

Uhh, excuse me, but what about Iraq

Well, well, well, Emperor George W is now threatening to 'punish' Russia (click title for link) for it's incursion into Georgia, cue ominous music. Give me a break. The U.S. has absolutely ZERO credibility on the matter of Russia and Georgia, and the rest of the world knows it.

It constantly amazes me how the United States, a Republic which is quickly showing its' imperial aspirations, can be so blatantly hypocritical and frankly, stupid. Like it or not, the US is a rogue state, in every sense and definition of the word. It is a nation which, having manufactured "proof" and "links" of 9/11 to Sadam Hussein, invaded the sovereign nation of Iraq. Now let's be clear from the get go, Iraq was not a bastion of joy nor was it a thriving democracy or even a semblance of one, but what it was, was an independent nation which, having posed no direct or indirect threat to the United States, was nonetheless invaded and is now currently occupied. In keeping with their Imperial occupation, they even assigned a Governor, much like Rome assigned Pontius Pilate to Judea. The comparison is neither hyperbole nor fear mongering, it is apt and factual.

I make this point because unlike the U.S. which had no legitimate reason the attack Iraq, it was and is a beaten country, Russia responded to a more proximate threat. Now to be fair and clear, Russia did go beyond what most would consider a measured response but as I said, at least they had a legitimate albeit tenuous reason for entering Georgia. Now enter the huffing and puffing U.S. of A. with its' arrogant belief in its' own superiority of righteousness and indignation.

Who are they Kidding?

Not the rest of the planet that's for sure. The United States abandoned any claim to the moral or ethical high ground when it decided to attack a weaker nation that posed no threat at all. Worse still, they lied to do it. Russia did not lie about why they entered Georgia, they did not manufacture "proof", ironically they didn't have to, the world saw for itself what was going on and further, we now know that the current president of Georgia is already in the pocket of the U.S. power brokers especially those in the Republican party.

And as if to make the point of just how out of sync and how much of a rogue state the U.S. is becoming, they are now planning to attack Iran. This of course would not only be big a blunder of epic proportions, but unlike Iraq, which was as I said a beaten country, Iran is no shrinking violet. No shrinking violet at all. Iran, unlike Iraq, has a very real air force, a very real army and very real weapons to fight. Further, much to the chagrin of many in the U.S., Iran's soldiers are very well trained and not at all weak. The U.S. was able to bully and plunder Iraq and beat it into submission, easy to do when the nation is already on its' knees, but to fight a protractor war with a nation that is both prepared and resolute......good luck with that.

Body Bags.

If the American public is disquieted by the site of soldiers in body bags, get ready because should the U.S. decide to hit Iran, they will not only have Iran to deal with. Russia and China, who by the by and who, contrary to what conservatives in the U.S. would have you think, are not slouches either in the arena of military power. This is important to note because they have already made it clear they will not tolerate any incursions into Iran. Further, and this is the important part, for all the U.S. bravura of being the worlds only superpower, the truth of the matter is, when the rest of the class stands up to the bully, it doesn't matter how big he is, he'll still get his ass kicked. Are you listening America. Yes, you, the once proud bastion of modern democracy have, whether you like it or not, become as Rome once was; arrogant, petulant, puerile, pugnacious and thuggish and like Rome, your empire is on the decline.

In the end U.S. will probably throw some sanctions at Russia but "so what" will be the response. Russian has Oil, Russia has Gas, Russia has more power than the U.S. will admit and although I loathe the idea of the Bear rising again, I cannot in good conscience cheer on the Eagle either.

Like bullies who cannot seem to stop chest thumping, the U.S. and Russia should both just cool it before the rest of us decide we have had enough.

Well wouldn't you know it, the AFA (American Family Assoc.) is at it again, complete with Alert banner. This time their target is that bastion of Gaydom, Hallmark Cards.

Now some of you may have recently heard that Hallmark Cards has decided to add three new Wedding Cards to it's vast repertoire of Wedding Cards. These cards will reflect a gay sensibility, in keeping with the shift to same-sex marriage. Well, the AFA is having none of it and have, as per their usual whine, cried foul and are now demanding a boycott of Hallmark. This of course is because unlike the traditional Hallmark motto of "when you care enough to send the very best" the AFA believes it should be "when you care enough to send the very best in Bigotry".

Oh you can just see the AFA all gathered in their little white sheets just brimming with fear at the idea of some gay people not only getting married but shock of shocks, getting wedding cards too......shocking.

Now I firmly believe in letting people believe what they want and if the AFA wants to boycott Hallmark then by all means, go for it.......for all the good it will do.

Like it or not, the world is 'evolving' (they hate that one too) and businesses, who by the by are in the habit of making money, are adapting to the change. Like the Dinosaurs they claim walked with man, these dino's are also becoming extinct. True, they aren't dying out fast enough for me but that's ok. Like the Bible says "the writings' on the wall".

The those who are more, shall we say, rational about these things, I encourage you to pick up a couple of these cards if only to make the point.

Well if that isn't the most pleasant of reasons to protest, wouldn't you say......I thought not. The truth of the matter is, this "church" which is of course nothing more than a cult made up of Fred Phelps and his incestious offspring and their incestous offspring, is a hate group pure and simple. To be sure they are free to practice their "religion" and exercise their "free speech" rights, but and it is a big but, we the citizens of Canada have every right to protest, fight and yes, even bar them from entering OUR country. Protest at home all you like Mr. Phelps, scream and holler to the top of your lungs about the wrath of God......just do it in your own country.

Now, I understand that they were originally stopped and barred from entering Canada yesterday, but wouldn't you know it.....apparently they snuck in overnight. That's right, they entered Canada illegally!!! As such, they are now criminals and should be treated as such. Truth is they already are criminals since they are, in my opinion, a terrorist organization.

Did I mention they planned to protest "Pastor Phelps Project" in Toronto. Surprising thing is, they were scared off by the prospect of being met by other protesters protesting them.

Oh well, all in all, quite a bunch. The sooner the RCMP get them the better and who knows, maybe they'll be tasered......we can always dream.

Now this really does take the cake........the AFA (American Family Assoc) is trying to get a boycott of MacDonald's because.....wait for it.....apparently, MacDonald's is not only pro-gay but is part of the evil gay agenda. By the By, I have yet to see this agenda, so if someone could please forward it to me, I would be most appreciative.

The AFA has, in my opinion, really bitten off more than they can chew. Bad enough they outright LIE about MacDonald's so called pushing the gay agenda, but they have forgotten one salient point. MacDonald's is big enough to simply ignore them, just as Ford did and happily, just as many people are now.

The AFA has, like a tin of tuna on a 7eleven shelf, long since past its best before date. Better to just accept that there are actually other people in the world who aren't straight, white, male, American or (horror of horrors) not Christian.

Get over yourselves and please don't disturb those of us living our lives, since clearly being concerned with ours, you have none of your own.

Dr. Henry Morgentaler gets the Order of Canada...Lookout!!!

Dr. Henry Morgentaler; Abortionist.

Shocking how that one statement can cause and stir such emotion, now add: Dr. Henry Morgentaler, recipient of the Order of Canada.

Now, I will admit to not being a fan of abortion, I do have my reservations.....however, as I man, I can't in good conscience dictate to a woman what she can or cannot do with her body. I am always hopeful that most women would be responsible to ensure they don't get pregnant or if they do, that they would choose adoption or some other course other than abortion, but as I said, ultimately, it's up to her to decide.

I make the above statement only for clarity as I am already witnessing the self flagulation and hyperbole of hypocracy coming from the religious right, who, surprise of surprises, are mostly MALE. Of course, I know that come tomorrow in the Toronto Sun, I have no doubt we shall be witness to a screed of whining Catholic Vitriol from my favourite hyper-crit, one Michael "I'm a Christian Dammit" Coren. As with other Catholics and Faux Pious MALES, Coren will no doubt regale us with commentary of how, along with Gays (who somehow will figure in all this), Dr. Morgentaler is bringing shame and dishonour to Canada.

Yes, Dr. Morgentaler is an abortionist and yes religious people do have a right to feel the way they do, but please, enough with the wailing and gnashing of teeth and the "Oh my God, how could they!". As I said, I myself am no fan of what the Doctor did and does but at the end of the day, if.....and I do mean IF there is a God and IF He is upset with what Dr. Morgentaler and women are doing, then frankly, it's up to Him to pass judgement and punishment as He sees fit. It is certainly NOT the purview of hypocritical Catholics and other so called Christians or any other faith for that matter to dictate to women. Like it or not gentlemen, women are persons under the law. Like it or not, they are equal under the law. Like it or not, they have the right to choose.

As for the Order of Canada, truth be told I personally don't much care why Dr. Morgentaler got it because frankly it's not something I personally care about. Also, I have to say "so what". So Dr. Henry Morgentaler got the Order of Canada, so what. Big deal. It is not the end of the world nor is it, as I am sure Mr. Coren will no doubt screech, a blemish on this great country of Canada.

Bottom line; the Order of Canada is given to those who have made a difference in the lives, politics and endeavours of this country and like it or not, Dr. Morgentaler has done that. Whether good or bad is, of course, a matter of opinion, but let's all just relax, take a deep breath and remember, this too shall pass.

As you no doubt can tell, I have no sympathy, no tears, no sweet words to offer to either his wife or family or his country for that matter. Jesse Helms was one of the old guard racists who just couldn't help but be what he was.....SCUM. Just as Jerry Falwell was SCUM, so too was Jessy Helms.

My final note on this will to paraphrase Bette Davis: "....my mother told me never to say anything bad about the dead, so, with that in mind.......Jesse Helms is dead.....GOOD!"

Having been under the weather for the last couple of days, I kept away from my laptop as I just didn't want anything to do with the world.......I'm glad it was a short stay.

Now imagine my surprise when, reading the Toronto Star, I came upon an editorial column entitled; "What's so scary about the right?"(click on blog title for link). Suffice to say the title intrigued me so I excitedly began to read. It took me only until the following quote for me to realize I was reading a slightly skewed view of the right.

"It is no surprise that Canadians feel this way. One reason may be the negative perception of the Bush administration."

"May be the negative perception..."?, surely the writer knew that this perception by Canadians was based on fact and not fiction. The Bush administration has been an abysmal failure both from a Liberal point of view but also, in many instances, a Conservative point of view. More on that later. I continued to read and two lines later:

"The Democrats are protectionist and anti-free trade. The Republicans tend to be free traders"

Very true I thought, but then, if that's where Republicans had kept their conservatism I doubt there'd be much fuss, but Canadians know there is more to the Republicans than simple conservative trade values. Next came this comment which, upon brief thought, made me wonder if the writer actually followed the news in the U.S.

"But beyond any specific issue, support for Democrats or Republicans is more than a choice between political parties; it is a choice of political inclinations. "

And that my friend is the key, the specifics are definitely important but the inclinations, especially where Bush Republicans are concerned, are even more so. If I may offer some of those inclinations:

1- Pre-emptive war against a sovereign nation for no valid or legal reason
2- Tax cuts for the upper percentile of the population, while gouging the middle and lower class
3- Record deficit spending (one would think a conservative would have an issue with this)
4- Erosion of civil rights, liberties and questionable legal proceedings (more akin to the old soviet union than an open democracy)
5- The intrusion of religious doctrine as policy

These are but a few points but one hopes the point is made.

Then came this statement:

"In Canada, as in the States, the divide between left and right continues to grow......Why are those on the left so sensitive when their support for politically correct, humanistic, big government is questioned?"

Sensitive?? this from a writer who bemoans that Canada isn't more Conservative? Let's talk about the so called 3 pillars the writer has brought up.

1- Political Correctness: is not the sole perview of the Left. Many on the Right have used the same tactic when it suited them and thus both sides can claim ownership.
2- Humanistic: on this point, the writer is correct, those who are more Liberal do tend to have a more humanistic view of the world, but so what? Being a humanist is neither pro or anti war, pro or anti tax, or anything else. Being a humanist simply means believing in the human aspect of both living and governance.
3- Big Government: again, not the sole perview of the Left. Many a Conservative government has opted for 'bigger is better', I need only remind the writer of Brian Mulroney's cabinet to make that clear.

"If I tell someone I respect George W. Bush's actions in Iraq, I must be prepared to be called a redneck, bigoted, fundamentalist Christian. Now, I'm a Christian, but I'm far from a redneck bigot"

Now it is true, being a Christian in and of itself does not make you a redneck bigot, but it does make you someone who will, by virtue of their belief, judge and, in extreme cases, condemn any and all others who do not fit their faith. Also, and this is important to note and perhaps the writer either forgot or hasn't noticed, but in the U.S., Christians are trying very hard to force their Biblical beliefs into law. A secular society, by definition should never tolerate this, theocracies are anethema to democracy. As for respecting George W. Bush's actions in Iraq, this simply tells me the writer is, well, an idiot. I am loathe to name call, but Iraq is illegal, immoral and imperialist is the worst way. If this is the kind of conservatism the writer seeks, then best he move to the U.S. and stop worrying about Canada.

As if this was not enough, along came this:

"Why are Canadians so fearful of the right? Since when are fiscal responsibility, lower taxes and less government in our lives bad things?"

They aren't bad things, the problem the writer has, and to be frank, is the blinders he so clearly has on. Blinders to the reality of the world around him. As I stated above, the Bush concept of conservatism has been anything but. Further, again as I have stated before, if it was left at that, I doubt many would have a problem. The truth is however, Conservatives are also Socially Conservative which, realistically, makes them quite anti-freedom when you think about it. If Conservatives believed in individual freedom and responsibility, which we hear so often, why deny some in society their "freedom" or ''responsibility"? Be it Blacks in the 50' and 60's to gays and lesbians today. The rigidity of Social Conservativism is the one aspect of Conservatives which makes most Canadians give pause, especially with Stephen Harper, to whit our writer states:

"The current opposition parties also are to blame for this negative perception of the right. They continue to demonize our Prime Minister because he is a real small-c "conservative."

Small-c Conservative?? Stephen Harper?? The man who wanted to re-open the gay marriage debate simply to placate the Christian Right in this country, and I have no doubt, Mr. Bush as well? The man who once declared that Alberta should build a firewall against the rest of Canada? The man who, supposedly a believer of open government, censures ministers, stifles debate, is openly hostile to the press, and offers an accountability bill full of anything but accountability. Add to this Mr. Harpers very clear desire to mimic Mr. Bush's theocratic view on the Canadian people. No, on this point the writer tries to blame everyone but the person responsible for creating the perception and goes further to state Mr. Harper is small-c, please!

"Harper may be a lot of things but a reactionary fundamentalist he is not."

Ok, this statement is deserving of derision for it's sheer audacity and ignorance, but I, being civil, will simply move on.

"We in the GTA should begin to see conservative politicians in a positive light"

All I can say to this is; give them reason to.

finally:

"Socialist policies are expensive and they restrict the economy. Besides, the only Marx that was ever worth paying attention to was Groucho."

Witty I suppose but does nothing to further the debate the writer is trying to initiate, in fact, he falls back on the same, tired and oh so predictable sarcasms more associated with Bill O'reilly, Ann Coulter or Rachel Marsden. As I finished the column I noted what the writers' occupation was at which point it all made sense. There's nothing wrong with being a banker but it does offer a glimpse into the psyche of the writer and thus, as I said, it all makes sense.

2 in 1: I can't believe some people

Hello all, well, today I have, as the title says, 2 in 1. That's right, today is usually Micheal Coren retort day but I just have to add this choice piece in because, truth be told, my jaw almost dropped on this one.

Take a look at the title of this book. Pray and be Rich, Biblical secrets to wealth.....WTF??!? Oh yes, if you think the title is something, you should know the author of this book is named, I could not make this up, Dr. Richard Gaylord Briley, I kid you not. Now, with a name like that.......ok, I will make no jokes but I will dissect this 'book' of secrets.

The add for this 'book' states the following:

"To start, to get the most from this sensational audio program and find daring faith to act upon your God-given potential for success, you must already believe that:
The Bible is more than humanity’s oldest book of living wisdom — though it is at least that.
Life has meaning and purpose.
Your life has a special purpose, even if that purpose and a plan to achieve it are not yet clear to you. "

That's right, all you need to do is have blind faith that a) the Bible is humanity's oldest book of 'living ' wisdom......come again.....uh, no, it's not. There are several books which predate the Bible which also offer up wisdom, 'living or otherwise. This statement itself is both pressumptuous and frankly, arrogant. It's akin to the old, My religion is better than yours, hardly Christ-like. b) Life has meaning and purpose, excuse me, but I don't think that statement is really necessary, do you? afterall, unless you're depressed and suicidal, most people would consider that statement to be a given. c) that you don't know Gods' plan but you should blindly accept your life's 'special purpose'.

Now don't get me wrong. If reading a book which basically uses Biblical scripture, contorted to justify greed, is for you then by all means read it and believe it, that is completely your right. I would however offer a caveat to doing so. Any book that purports to use any scripture to shore up the concept of free market capitalism is, bluntly put, an abhortent display of both greed and cynical manipulation, especially against the poor.

This book basically states, "All babies are born poor. But as you’ll find out in Pray and Be Rich, five percent of them, in free societies, grow up to be richer than the rest." -- so, it appears that Dr. Briley is basically stating, Greed is good and if you buy my book, you too can be "richer than the rest". So much for Christian charity and brotherly love. As for the free societies comment, it's just so much jingoism.

"This widely-ignored fact gives extra hope for success to anyone with a clear goal in life."-- widely-ignored? First off, I would be remiss if I didn't point out the obvious flaw in this statement but I suspect that the children of a Donald Trump or a Queen Elizabeth did not come into this world poor. The truth is, many children are born quite wealthy and that, I can assure the good Doctor, is not "widely-ignored".

"Pray and Be Rich reveals the Biblical secrets that will enable you to become a member of the five percent of people who rise to the top and succeed. " -- that's right, leave all those non-believing suckers behind, screw them, you need only be one of the chosen 5%. If this statement wasn't so blatantly anti-Christian in it's message, it would be laughable. Sadly, this isn't funny.

Many people, good, hardworking and yes, religious people, will unfortunately make the Doctor a member of the vaunted 5% by buying his book. Now, at this point I have to say, the Doctor has every right to publish this 'book' and you, the public, can buy it. But permit me to at least remind you, Caveat Emptor, Let the buyer beware. Better to save your money and not let the good Doctor enter the hollowed halls of the chosen few.

An now, to my regularly schedule missive on our friend, Micheal Coren. Todays' Toronto Sun column by Mr. Coren touched the topic of "Hate debate, Zealots too quick to complain to human rights commissions". The title alone betrays Mr. Coren's bias, so much so that he couldn't keep himself from using the word Zealot, the only good thing about that is he at least stayed away from his favourite buzz word, fetish. Michael truly enjoys that word and I will not deny I shudder at thought of why.

Now to be fair, the column itself does speak to some legitmate concerns in regards to some people using the HRC for the purpose of censorship and that should be a concern...... however, you knew I would have a however, Mr. Coren continues to use a self indulgent tone which he then uses to beat on his usual targets, Liberals and, surprise, surprise....gays. One has to wonder sometimes where Mr. Coren's head is at because he always, without exception, finds a way to blame gay people, but then again, Mr. Coren cannot be acused of seeing gays as people.....but I digress.

The column speaks to the cases, as I have mentioned before, of Ezra Levant and Mark Steyn, both of whom are being brought before the HRC because some Muslim law students felt offended by the former and shafted by the latter. Ezra Levants 'crime' was to publish already seen cartoons of the prophet as a terrorist. Tacky yes, criminal? no. The reason is that he was covering a news story and simply offered the subject for judgement. Mr. Steyn's 'crime' was writing about Islam and it's rise in the world. The law students wanted to rebut the article, written in MacLean's, but were refused, for this they claim to be offended. Now, this case, like Mr. Levants, is not a legitimate complaint because the students had and have other outlets in which to refute the article if they wish. So far, so good. Mr. Coren touched on these points and had he left it there I would not have written a word, but.........he profers to following:

"The rallying cry of self-justifying liberals as they run to human rights commissions with complaints or to the courts with their latest hate crimes prosecution" -- Mr. Coren conveniently forgets that many a sef-righteous conservative christian has run to the same commissions and courts. The difference of course, and what Mr. Coren neglects to point out, is that when conservatives go to HRC or the courts, it's usually to stifle or outright deny basic rights to people who do not believe as they do.

Mr. Coren further goes on to state that gays have joined the "censorship festival", how clever. Again what Mr. Coren refuses to understand is that not all Gays, Liberals, Jews or Muslims run to the HRC or the courts. Most of us are quite capable of dealing with those who offend quite easily, the unfortunate thing is, until people like Mr. Coren come to accept that Straigh White Christian Men don't have all the power anymore and if they continue to attack, and let's be clear, much of what is said to Gays, Liberals, Jews and Muslims is purposefully an attack, they will be held accountable. Does this mean every case to the HRC is legitimate? no. Does this mean all SWCM should be tarred and feathered or vilified? absolutely not. But should SWCM come to realize the reality of the world they now populate? YES.

As I said, Mr. Coren had a legitimate point to make but sadly, as is far to common with his writing, he hurls accusations and insults just because he can. I have no problem with any of it per se, but I do wish Mr. Coren would show some class and less carpet bombing tactics against others.

The Critic of the Critic of the Critic is my friend????

Once again, in one week no less, David has found a way to be petulant, although I give him credit for at least not sounding like squealing Drama Princess (a title I bestowed on him earlier).

His Friday column, which can be linked to by clicking the title of the blog, had to do with the Critics of the Critics of John McCain and how they're feeling picked on by the big bad mainstream media, God, hasn't that little chestnut run its course yet.

Well, as one may imagine, David decided that it's not right for moderate conservatives to criticize the critics because they, David and his ilk, are the guardians of all things truly conservative and that they and they alone are the more principled......spare me.

Now as always, I firmly believe in letting people hang themselves with their own words, or at least show their true colours, so without further ado, let's take a look shall we.

"Isn't it ironic that GOP moderates are harshly criticizing GOP conservatives for being harshly critical of GOP presidential front-runner John McCain? ", now he starts with this statement and has to audacity to use the word ironic. What? There is nothing ironic about it because those moderates he's talking about aren't being harsh at all. They are in fact trying bring a more civil tone to the discourse which, like it or not David, you have not been.

"What mortal sins have conservative McCain critics committed? Oh, they've stuck to their conservative principles, fighting for the values they believe in and refusing, prematurely, to surrender." , oh to be sure they are sticking to their principles, such as they are, but truth be told, Mr. McCains' critics on the far Right, to which David belongs, have been more than simply sticking to their principles, they've been trampling over them as well. Calling John McCain a "filthy Liberal", "baby killer", "Pro-Gay??" that last one really stretches credulity but you get the point. Talk about being uncivil.

"For the record, I can't see myself as ever voting for either Hillary or Barack, two unreconstructed socialists who are soft on defense and enemies of the unborn." Well, that is your right David but again, you miss the point. Conservatism, at least as I understand it, means keeping government out peoples personal lives, by definition this would supposedly include what people do with their own bodies. I must digress for a moment and comment on the strange and rather paternalistic view men have when it comes to abortion. Personally I don't like it but as a man, it is certainly not my place to dictate to a woman.

"The idea that our party can't recover from vigorous debate during the primaries is unserious", Vigorous debate is always good but when all you do is throw around name calling (see unreconstructed socialists), you can't very well win on that, simply because, name calling isn't vigorous debate, it's vigorous debasement.

"In the meantime, rumors of the death of mainstream conservatism are greatly exaggerated", true, it may not be dead but it appears that it is being given it's hat and shown the door. Perhaps it should leave, at least for awhile, so that it may reflect on it's rigidness and inflexible ways......just a thought.

"Even their reprehensible character assassination of President Bush has lost steam since the surge began yielding fruit.", now David, you know that this statement is not only patently false, it is, quite frankly wishful thinking from a dying regime, namely the aformentioned George W. Bush, et al. As for the Character assassination, be honest, he brought much of it on himself, much like most conservative radio commentators, who, as we have seen since super tuesday, are not taken seriously at all.

and finally, this little closer,

"But would the critics of McCain's critics please quit trying to marginalize mainstream conservatives and redefine mainstream conservatism? Just admit your guy is not that conservative and let us hold his feet to the fire", Mainstream conservatives are not you David, nor are they Ann Coulter, Bill O'reilly, Sean Hannity or Rush, no, they are in fact people who believe in less government, strong defence, and most importantly, and this is where you and yours diverge from conservatism, LIBERTY for all. The truth is David, your kind of conservatism is only freedom for those who not only think as you do but also meddle as you do. All others need not apply.

So criticize if you must but do so in a manner that is appropriate and tasteful because at the end of it all, shrill screeches and name calling says more about you than it does about John McCain.

Ann Coulter.....what more needs to be said........

Ahh, Ann Coulter (pictured), does more need to be said, her name is akin to scratches on a chalkboard. She of the long blond locks and acid tongue is nothing if not somewhat amusing, sad really, given that she and her rabid followers actually take her seriously.

Now today being Thursday, I decided to slum it by visiting Ann's site to see what gem she had posted today and of course, she did not disappoint. She, like others of her ilk, David and Rush Limbaugh among other luminaries of the Right, couldn't hold back her contempt for republican hopeful John McCain. So, in keeping with my right and duty to dissect and, where applicable, eviscerate the Radical Right, permit me to share some of her comments and my retorts.

"Nominating McCain is the gesture of a desperate party", and if anyone is desperate it's our little semi-orphan annie (only daddy's dead so far), please Ann, give it a rest, just because a more progressive thinker may head the republicans is no reason to feel desperate, perhaps you should move to Wysteria lane for awhile, I'm sure the girls would love to see you, oh wait, you can't, you're not a housewife are you.......come to think of it, you've never been married....hmmmmm

"He hysterically opposes waterboarding terrorists and wants to shut down Guantanamo. ", this Ann is probably because unlike you, he actually knows a little something about torture. Ann's idea of torture is not being able to gas gays, lynch blacks (unless they're republicans or her driver, in which case they get to live) or kill Muslims.

"He denounced the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.", and rightly so Ann, they lied and you know it.

"He opposes ANWR and supports the global warming cult, even posturing with fellow mountebank Arnold Schwarzenegger in front of solar panels", Yes, yes, we already know, Ann believes in 'raping' the planet because apparently the Bible says we can. Is it just me or does Ann have some kind of rape fantansy thing going, afterall, she calls Bill Clinton a rapist all the time and last I checked he's never been charged or convicted.

"The only site that would have been more appropriate for Schwarzenegger in endorsing McCain would have been in front of an abortion clinic. ", as opposed to Ann who would love to pose in front of an Aids Hospice with her kindred spirit Fred 'I'm a loon' Phelps.

"In 2004, McCain criticized the federal marriage amendment, saying, it was "antithetical in every way to the core philosophy of Republicans." Really? Preventing the redefinition of a 10,000-year-old institution -- marriage, that is, not John McCain -- is part of the core philosophy of being a Republican?", Say What?, sorry Ann, marriage is not 10,000 years old........hey wait a minute, how could it be anyway, don't you evangelical types believe the earth is only 6000 years old?? Ann, you little deviant thinker you, are you finally coming to realize the truth that is evolution??!!

"I'm not a lawyer -- oh wait, yes, I am....", Barely and besides, that's what spreading your legs will get you, that and maybe a job as an intern.......maybe Ann should give Monica some pointers. I mean really, does anyone really believe she 'earned' her law degree any other way......now Ann, don't be defensive, afterall, I'm just exercising my free speech to state my opinion, you know, just like you always do.

On the matter of Gay Marriage......

Okie Dokie then. We in Canada are lucky enough to be progressive to the point allowing gay marriage, dear God, how do the Evangelicals south of the border sleep at night knowing that, painfully one hopes. I digress.

I want to touch on this subject only because it seems to me that it continues to be a bur in the saddle of more than just a few of our Tighty-Righties, especially in the good ol' U, S of A. Now, to be sure we have our fair share up here but suffice to say, down south y'all got 'em big time.

Gay Marriage, say it loud enough and the Righties come running out of the woodwork faster than you can say 'there's a lynching!', again I digress. Now what's so funny about the Gay Marriage hooplah is the fact that the arguments put forward never quite ring true, especially where the U.S. is concerned, consider if you will:

Argument #1: Marriage is a God given right and blessing because the Bible says so.......WRONG, the Bible never used the word Marriage (see my previous blog for an explanation) it use the words betrothed and companion. Marriage is pagan.

Argument #2: Marriage is a religious (pagan) creation and is protected under the freedom of religion clause of the constitution.......TRUE, but it begs the question, what of those religious churches, synagogues or other faith that has no problem with marrying gay people, doesn't their religious freedom also apply? This particular question always gets a strange stare and then usually a "but that's different" response....in other words, the religious freedom argument is only good for heterosexual religious people, no one else need apply.

Argument #3: If you allow Gay Marriage, you'll have people wanting to marry more than one person, paedophilia will be legal, brother and sister will able to marry and, my personal favourite, a man will be able to marry his dog........OH BROTHER, ok, now given that this one is particularly full of hyperbole and bovine refuse (BS), I will nonetheless retort: a) people were trying for multiple partners long before gays got involved, just ask the Mormons...hmmm...they're kind of evangelical themselves aren't they?? b) Paedophilia and Beastiality are both illegal for the simple fact that consent cannot be given, either by a child or a dog, so please stop it with this one already ok? c) Finally the incest argument. Although I am loath to say I could argue this one off as easily as the other, I can't, simply because.....get ready for it.....the law already allows it in so southern states and has done so for well over 150 years, still on the books, so you can't blame the queers for that one.

So the question then becomes, 'what's the big deal?' Sadly it can only be one thing, simply put, it's hate. Love the sinner but hate sin is bullshit no matter how many ways you serve it up.

On another note, and please bear with me, I find it odd that whenever there are natural disasters or terrorist attacks, the Righties waste no time in declaring, "God is punishing 'so and so' because of Homos", really? Shall we put that to the test??

Alright, so, maybe he's not a drama queen....yet. but say this about David Limbaugh (pictured), he's working hard on it. Take if you will the gem of an opinion piece on News Max (click title for link)

He starts off with the following statement which, let's face it, says it all, "I suppose I could be accused of over-dramatizing, but.....", but nothing David, you are over-dramatizing and like the title of this blog says, conservatives call gays drama queens??

Of course this over-dramatizing is brought on by a bout of child like whining because he may not have a white bread, Christian, heterosexual, Uber-Conservative running on his beloved republican party ticket for the presidency......cry me a fucking river David and while your at it, change your diaper too, no doubt you soiled yourself at the realization that America and Americans themselves have finally had enough. Consider this long winded list he gives for why he is upset with John McCain:

Really David? all that?, well permit me for a moment to go through this list and see exactly what is wrong with it, ok? Here we go, line by line:

"In that case, the presidential candidates of both parties would be willing to use the bully pulpit and governing power of the presidency to suppress political speech"--Suppress political speech, you mean like the republican spin machines of Fox News, Ann Coulter and others did when some Americans, having exercised said free speech against the war, only to be called un-american or un-patriotic, yes, I can see where the republicans are all about the free speech.

"punish producers, oil companies and drug companies" -- Yup, that's right, God forbid people or corporations not be held accountable for their actions and/or inactions as the case may be, afterall, who cares if oil companies continue to stifle new technology for energy or gassaving cars, the greed and profits must flow. Oh, and we mustn't tut tut on the drug cartels....sorry, companies, because who gives a damn if some people die because they can't afford the price.

"open wider our borders" -- Wow, I wasn't aware that was in the works, silly me thought they (McCain and the Democrats) simply wanted to solve the problem of those who are already in the US as well as controlling the border. I suppose you would prefer a culling of the herd, say, $50 for every illegal you can find or shoot.....very Dick Cheney of you.

"cater to the whacko environmental movement and its junk-science-driven pseudo-consensus on global warming"-- right you are David because as Ann Coulter said, God made the planet to "raped" by man didn't He. This comment is just so out of tune with reality it deserves no further comment.

"nominate judges who don't "wear their conservatism on their sleeve," " -- yes, because conservatives always nominate judges who "wear their liberalism on their sleeves", on this one David I say, grow up.

"close Gitmo" -- it needs to be David and frankly it's a shame you're either too deluded, confused and just plain sadistic to know any better.

"confer constitutional civil liberties on enemy combatants" -- Why of course.....afterall, why show the people you're trying to convince that democracy and decency are good when you can just have drum head trials and kangaroo courts, yeah.....that'll show the world won't it.

"end life-saving interrogation techniques" -- Gotta love the torture, but David remember this, sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. You play in the mud, you get dirty, no way around that one.

"demonize evangelical conservatives" -- Well, fair is fair, after 2000 years of Christians shitting on everyone else, a little pay back couldn't hurt, besides, it's not like evangelical demonize others right??

"and obstruct efforts of conservative Republican legislators." -- to do what exactly David? please dear boy, please explain because from where I sit, in Canada, I see plenty of conservative efforts doing just fine.

In the end, David seems terrified at the prospect of someone other than a NewsMax/FoxNews annointed being elected. Well David, as you and your cohorts are constantly harping on the wonderful freedom of the US, you might well remember that sometimes the people don't agree with you, that's democracy in action.

By the way David, you are over-dramatizing and frankly you're not pretty enough to be a drama queen so you'll have to settle for drama princess.

Well now, just when you thought, maybe, just maybe there would be some civil or intelligent discussions in some circles, along comes the Religious Right trumpeting the scourge of "the Gay".

That's right, "the Gay", as if it were some disease to be feared and terribly contagious. Give me a break!

Bad enough we have Floridians allowing a consitutional ban put on the ballot and Lord knows the other goosesteppers of the Catholic Reich are doing the Fur...sorry.....Popes' bidding on the matter, but frankly I've had enough. Pardon the pun but, LET"S GET ONE THING STRAIGHT!, Marriage, the word, the concept, the construct is not Biblical, repeat, NOT Biblical. Marriage, the word, is in fact Latin, from the Romans, who were Marrying long before Christians came along. Marriage was and frankly, to be historically accurate, is still a pagan ritual. That's right Ma and Pa Christofacist, it ain't Christian at all. The concept and word of marriage was used in Rome long before the Christian faith took hold and it was not uncommon to find Men marrying Men or any other construct which suited the people. For Romans, marriage was a contract, an agreement of principle which was used most often for purposes of Political and Economical convenience. The Roman Pagan belief structure allowed for this without any moral or ethical dilemma. Now of course, many Christians today, having never truly studied the Bible let alone ancient history will no doubt claim, "but it says so in the KJV Bible", because as we all know, the original Bible was written in english.....oh brother.

Now, for those still on the same page, here's a bit of fact for you, in the Bible, the original, the word marriage never appears, not once. The word used for "marriage" is Betrothed, they don't even sound the same, but I digress.

If people want to be against Marriage for same sex couples then simply acknowledge that it is you who using the wrong word and start calling yourselves betrothed. Marriage, like most Pagan ceremonies of the time, was co-opted by the Christians so as to placate the Roman citizenry. Like Christmas (Saturnalia), Lights (Festival of Light) even the festivities of Drink and Merryment (Baccus), Christianity took what it needed to be pragmatic in the times following the death of Christ right up to and including the Council of Necene.

As for "the Gay", really now, do Right Wingnuts truly believe that this is something new or unusual or worse, something catching?!?

The truth is sadly, as with all things where Righties are concerned, simple. The fact is, "the Gay" is not catching on, it's just being honest, you know, like the good book says you should be, and if for one moment, Righties would be honest, they would come to realize their own inequities and stop foisting their beliefs on others.

In the end it is just 'belief', nothing more, nothing less. Believe what you will, that is your right, but please, leave "the Gay" alone, it frankly never did anything to you, you on the other hand my dear Christian Righties, have the blood and sorrow of many "the Gay" on both your hands.

Canada's Virtual Fox News

Ok, so this is my second entry and I'm still finding my legs on this whole blogging thing, but I must confess it is cathartic.

As I sit this morning, coffee in hand and thoughts of how to avoid the Super Hype Bowl, I find myself surfing the net when lo and behold I come upon "Canada Free Press". Now, my being the kind of person who enjoys free thinking I eagerly head to the site......MISTAKE!

Canada Free Press, which boast that it is "Canada's fastest growing independent news source", is anything but independent. Like most so called independent news organizations, claiming to be "fair and balanced" it is anything but. It is, for all intense and purposes, a pale and shallow copy of Fox News, complete with chicken little thinking on subjects that deserve far more scrutiny than simple conjecture and opinion. Now of course, this blog is my opinion, but that's acceptable given that I'm not claiming to be news, however, if a site purports to be News, then be News.

Canada Free Press does have News to be sure and they do an admirable job of 'Foxing' up just enough so as to come across as News, but within moments of reading any of the 'articles' one comes quickly to realize that this is just the same tired nonsense about how the left is responsible for all things wrong in the world. Now, unlike Fox News or Canada Free Press, I believe in taking to task any organization which purports to be News but slants it so much, it becomes just more political gamesmanship. Air America is a left wing broadcast which, like it or not, is just as disingenuous as Fox News. They too have a Fox News mentality only for the left. For all of his bravura, Al Franken, who is no fool, falls terribly into the same trap as most who take their politics and mix it into the News.

Bottom line on this subject is this: If you're going to call yourself a 'Fair and Balanced' News site or an 'Independent source for News' then be that. Leave the conjecture at home. Don't try to 'liven' it up just because your constituancy might like it. Opinion is opinion, News is News, and although occasionally the twain shall meet, they should not be forced into bed together everytime. The bastard children of that coupling are already knee deep and it would be nice if a little 'safe sex' were praticed where these two were concerned.

Dan Quayle, Canadian Edition

Ok, so, this is my time blogging and I have to admit, it's a bit daunting, but, like the title says, the radical right is full of it and I just want to add my voice to the struggle for some sanity. Now don't misunderstand me, not all conservatives are radical right wingnuts, anymore than all liberals are foaming at the mouth marxists, and be advised, I will go after Left wing radicals as well.

That said, permit me now to share my thoughts on one the few people in Canada who just makes me cringe.....I speak of one Michael Coren (pictured). Now to those of you who are Canadian, liberal, conservative or just readers of the Sun, you probably know our Mr. Coren.

Now why start with Mr. Coren?? Why not and let's be honest, he just has it coming. Take for instance the title of this blog, Dan Quayle, Canadian Edition. For those of you who can remember the first Bush presidency, Dan Quayle was Vice-President at the time. During his tenure, a sitcom named Murphy Brown had televised the main character, played by Candice Bergen, as having a child out of wedlock. Vice President Quayle, you may recall, flipped out, so to speak and actually chastised a fictional television character for having a baby with no father. Now, one can perhaps understand Mr. Quayle wanting to say fathers are important, which they are, but please, to attack a television character, that was too much even for many Americans to take seriously.

Now fast forward to 2008. One would think we would have progressed enough in intelligence as to not blame a tv character or show as being the end all and be all, or representive of a group or societal issue. You would hope not, but alas, we have Michael Coren. In his Saturday Toronto Sun column of Feb. 2nd, Mr. Coren proceeds to trash Little Mosque on the Prarie for, get this, not showing an episode of a father killing his daughter because she won't wear a hijab. Now, he's not being serious, at least one hopes not, but he further whines about how a student at the University of Toronto rights a blog full of hate and bile against jews and then further put foot to mouth by implying that this one show should be held somehow accountable for not showing the "truth" about Islam. Now, you would think this would do it, but no....he then proceeds to argue how conservative commentators are being dragged through the mud via the human rights commissions regarding their remarks about Islam.

I bring all of this up simply because, as is sadly common with Mr. Coren, he lumps multiple issues into one hodgepodge of soup and expects it to be digested as steak.

Yes, Salman Hossain, the U of T student who did write vile things against Canada and Jews, should be taken to task. Write an article at length on this by all means, but no, let's blame a tv show while we're at it.

Yes, Ezra Levant and Mark Steyn should not be up in front of the human right tribunal for their writings or news stories, and yes, the tribunal should be taken to task. Again, write an article at length on this, but again, Mr. Coren slams a tv show.

Michael please, do show a little intelligence in not blaming a sitcom, that's right, a sitcom, for not showing an episode about a father murdering his daughter "because I can't imagine for a moment that such a show is not covering every fascinating aspect of the Canadian Islamic world." This charming line of sarcasm is indicative of Mr. Corens' writting and sadly, I have no doubt many find him amusing, personally I can do without it.

It's a comedy and yes, it doesn't show the dark side of Islam, but then again, Little House on the Prarie wasn't exactly showing the hateful side of radical Christianity either, and it was a drama.

In the end, Mr. Coren does what he always does, write oh so clever lines a la Ann Coulter, blaming a sitcom for not being serious. It is true that radical Islam is a problem, just as any radical religious view is a problem, but again I say, Mr. Coren, don't be so facetious and please try to stay on topic. It would do you well to remember that trying to be intelligent is a noble endeavour but using Ann Coulter or Rachel Marsden style writting and "wit" is really quite ignoble and shows a lack of respect, intelligence and creativity.

Humour can be used to discuss serious issues, and perhaps, in time, Little Mosque will, but in the meantime, leave it for what it is: a sitcom, no more, no less.
